Afterthoughts from the Championship Afterglow

June 15th, 2009 | by Garrett Wilson |

After getting to bask in the championship afterglow for a night, here are a few more random thoughts that crossed my mind about the Lakers championship run:

  • I love that at the same time the Lakers are busy winning a title, the Suns are frantically trying to give away Shaquille O’Neal for Sasha Pavlovic and the mummified remains of Ben Wallace.  Game, set, match Kobe.
  • The Lakers should be very excited that they were able to win a title with Andrew Bynum barely playing at half of his potential.  He was the alleged reason the team fell short against Boston, and that could have been the case again this year but the rest of the team pulled together.  If they ever to get a full out Bynum for a post-season the rest of the NBA should be very scared.
  • Yes, it’s true.  Adam Morrison, DJ Mbenga and Sun Yue all have championship titles now.  Hahaha, it’s all very funny.  Get over it.  Every single championship team has a few scrubs who end up with rings without ever actually doing anything to earn it.  If you don’t believe me, please take a look at Jud Buechler’s fingers.
  • Mbenga is champ!

  • Trevor Ariza and Lamar Odom made themselves a whole lot money in the Finals, prices which the Lakers would be wise to pay.  The Lakers still have flaws that need fixing, but they have a fairly young core and messing with that core could close their championship window (which is WIDE open right now) prematurely.
  • The one week moratorium on Laker flags has begun.  You now have seven days to take the flags off your car.  It is like getting your Christmas lights down by the day after New Year’s.  Don’t be the on a-hole on the block who leaves the lights for a month.
  • truck with Laker flags

  • Could someone please check Sasha Vujacic’s contract to see if their is an escape clause triggered for the Lakers by the virtue of The Machine not making a single shot in the NBA Finals.
  • Savor this.  Laker fans are spoiled by a history of winning championships, especially over the last 25 years.  As a fan of two far less successful franchises (LA Angels and LA Kings) I realize just how hard it is to come by a championship.  Don’t take this title for granted because there is no telling how long it could be before the Lakers win their next one.  Talking about this squad becoming a dynasty is nice, but fate has a way of intervening sometimes.
